Origin and evolution

In February 2024, Humanity Protocol emerged from stealth mode founded by Terence Kwok, technology entrepreneur and former founder of Tink Labs, a digital hospitality startup. The founding board included Yat Siu, executive chairman of Animoca Brands, and Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon Labs. The project's premise established that the rise of artificial intelligence made it urgent to distinguish humans from bots on the internet, considering that existing solutions such as World/Worldcoin's iris scanning were invasive or centralised.

In May 2024, the protocol completed a seed round of 30 million dollars led by Kingsway Capital, with participation from Animoca Brands, Blockchain.com, Hashed and Shima Capital, reaching a valuation of 1,000 million dollars. On 30th September 2024, the testnet was launched in phases, beginning with Phase 1 of Human ID reservation, which attracted 150,000 participants in the first week. Before the launch, there was already a waiting list of 1 million registrations, and in the following three months, more than 2 million Human IDs were created. During this period, palm scanner demonstrations were also conducted at TOKEN2049 Singapore.

In January 2025, the Humanity Foundation was established with Yat Siu as founding director, accompanied by an additional funding round of 20 million dollars with participation from Pantera Capital and Jump Crypto, raising the post-money valuation to 1,100 million dollars. On 25th June 2025, the H token launch (TGE) took place alongside the first "Fairdrop", where the protocol used its own palm scanning technology to distribute tokens exclusively to verified humans, excluding bots and multiple identities. The total supply was established at 10,000 million H tokens under the ERC-20 standard.

During 2025, the project launched APIs for developers and advanced to Phase 2 of the testnet, incorporating biometric verification through palm scanning via mobile application. At the close of this period, more than 8 million users had reserved their Human ID on the platform.

How it works

Humanity Protocol operates as a Layer 2 blockchain built on Ethereum utilising Polygon CDK, with the specific objective of verifying human identities and preventing Sybil attacks. Its central mechanism, called Proof of Humanity (PoH), functions through a biometric verification process that begins when the user scans their palm through a mobile application in Phase 1, whilst Phase 2 will incorporate specialised hardware to scan palm veins using infrared. The system locally generates an irreversible mathematical hash of this biometric data, guaranteeing that personal information never leaves the user's device.

From this hash, the protocol creates a zero-knowledge proof (ZK proof) that confirms the user's uniqueness without revealing their personal data, granting them a Human ID as a reusable and portable credential. Validator nodes, called zkProofers, process these verifications and receive rewards in H tokens (ERC-20), which also function as a means of payment for verification fees and as the protocol's governance token.

The platform integrates Fairdrops, a system that utilises verified Human IDs to guarantee that airdrops from other projects reach exclusively unique humans, eliminating automated farming. The protocol contemplates additional use cases that include voting in decentralised autonomous organisations (DAOs), KYC/AML processes, access control to buildings and events, and payment systems based on palm recognition.
