Origin and evolution

Gala Games was founded in 2019 by Eric Schiermeyer, co-founder of Zynga —the company behind FarmVille and Zynga Poker— and former CTO of MySpace and Intermix Media, a graduate of the University of California. He was joined by Michael McCarthy, with more than 20 years of experience in the video game industry as former creative director at Interplay Entertainment and Troika Games and responsible for Farmville 2 at Zynga, and Wright Thurston, one of the first major cryptocurrency miners and holder of multiple patents on blockchain technology. The project's objective was to create a video game ecosystem in which players would be actual owners of their in-game assets through NFTs.

On 11th September 2020, GALA token emissions began to Founder Node operators, without pre-sale or prior ICO. GALA was publicly listed in November 2020, when Town Star, the platform's first game based on play-to-earn farm simulation, also entered beta phase. During 2021, Gala Games exceeded 1.3 million active users and in December announced a partnership with C2 Ventures, founded by Ciara Sun (former Huobi), to create a 100 million USD fund for investment in blockchain gaming projects. GALA reached an all-time high of approximately 0.83 USD.

In February 2022, Gala Games expanded its ecosystem beyond gaming with the launch of Gala Music and Gala Film, adding Snoop Dogg as part of Gala Music. Project GYRI was announced, Gala's own blockchain later called GalaChain, which uses GALA as gas and is designed to support the transaction volume of games. On 15th May 2023, Gala Games burnt approximately 20,900 million GALA tokens from reserve funds and node rewards, valued at around 660 million USD, in a gesture of transparency and ecosystem sustainability.

On 31st August 2023, a legal lawsuit erupted between co-founders: Schiermeyer sued Wright Thurston alleging theft of GALA tokens valued at 130 million USD, whilst Thurston counter-sued Schiermeyer for 750 million USD alleging misuse of corporate funds for personal expenses. Gala Games published an official statement indicating that the dispute was between the founders in a personal capacity and did not affect the company. In May 2024, a hacker minted 5,000 million GALA tokens valued at around 200 million USD by compromising a smart contract administration account. Gala Games paused the contract, recovered most of the tokens and executed a v2 update of the GALA token with security improvements.

In August 2024, Gala introduced a daily dynamic emissions model for GALA, establishing daily emission at 0.25% of the difference between the current total supply and the established maximum. In November 2024, GalaChain integrated with Bitrue, becoming the first international exchange to support Gala's L1 blockchain. In mid-2025, GALA occupies third place by capitalisation among gaming tokens, although in July 2025 the closure of The Walking Dead: Empires, one of the platform's games, occurred.

How it works

GALA functions as the native utility token of the Gala Games ecosystem, a blockchain gaming platform that allows players to truly own their digital assets through NFTs. The technical architecture is supported by three fundamental pillars: GalaChain, a proprietary L1 blockchain optimised for the high volume of gaming transactions that uses GALA as fuel for transactions and maintains bridges with Ethereum; the Founder Nodes, which are computers operated by users who have acquired node licences and keep the software active to sustain the distributed network in exchange for daily rewards in GALA and exclusive NFTs; and an integrated marketplace where players can buy, sell and exchange their digital assets.

The GALA token fulfils multiple functions within the ecosystem: it serves as gas for transactions on GalaChain, enables the purchase of NFTs in the official store (where the tokens used are permanently burnt), and enables staking and governance functions that allow node operators to vote on the integration of new projects. Each game in the ecosystem generates its own specific tokens (such as TOWN for Town Star or SILK for Spider Tanks) that can be converted into GALA, creating an interconnected system. The economic model incorporates a deflationary mechanism through the burning of tokens from ecosystem revenue, whilst daily emissions function dynamically from August 2024, representing 0.25% of the difference between the current supply and the established maximum of 35,240 million tokens. The platform has expanded this model beyond gaming towards Gala Music for music distribution and Gala Film for decentralised film production.
