Origin and evolution

The BitTorrent protocol was born in 2001 from the hand of Bram Cohen, an American software engineer who developed a decentralised alternative to traditional file distribution systems. The innovation consisted of fragmenting large files and distributing them amongst multiple users who shared and downloaded simultaneously, thus eliminating dependence on a central server. This technology reached more than 2,000 million users during its first two decades of operation.

In July 2018, Justin Sun, founder of TRON, acquired BitTorrent Inc. for 127 million dollars through Rainberry Acquisition Inc. Bram Cohen rejected the offer to continue in the project following the acquisition. The purchase formed part of Sun's strategy to merge massive internet platforms with blockchain technology.

On 31st January 2019, the BTT token was launched through an initial coin offering on Binance Launchpad. 60,000 million BTT were sold in a matter of minutes, raising 7.2 million dollars with an initial price of 0.00012 dollars. In five days the price doubled. BTT was configured as a TRC-10 token on the TRON blockchain, with a total supply of 990,000 million tokens.

During 2019, new functionalities were implemented such as BitTorrent Speed, which allowed users to pay in BTT to obtain faster downloads, and BTFS (BitTorrent File System), a decentralised storage system similar to Filecoin.

In December 2021, TRON executed a 1:1,000 redenomination of the BTT token, whereby holders received 1,000 new BTT for each old BTT. The unit price fell proportionally, bringing the token to the microprice range. The new BTT went on to operate as TRC-20, with the declared objective of improving liquidity and expanding distribution.

How it works

BitTorrent functions as the world's largest peer-to-peer file transfer protocol, with hundreds of millions of users sharing data directly between their devices without the need for centralised servers. The system fragments each file into multiple pieces that users download and redistribute simultaneously: when more people possess a complete file (known as seeders), the greater download speed all other users obtain. The BTT token, built as a TRC-20 token on the TRON blockchain, introduces an economic incentive system to this traditionally free protocol.

Tokenisation allows users who contribute bandwidth as seeders to receive compensation in BTT, whilst downloaders can pay BTT to access superior speeds through the BitTorrent Speed service. The ecosystem expands with BTFS (BitTorrent File System), a decentralised storage system where users who provide disk space receive BTT and those who store files pay for the service. With a total supply of 990,000 million BTT following redenomination, the token operates entirely on TRON infrastructure, without decentralised governance mechanisms, as strategic decisions remain under the control of the TRON/BitTorrent team led by Justin Sun.
