XRP is the native cryptocurrency of the XRP Ledger, a blockchain developed in 2012 by David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb, Arthur Britto and Chris Larsen, later developed and promoted by Ripple Labs. Unlike Bitcoin, the XRP Ledger does not use proof of work: transactions are validated through a proprietary consensus mechanism that allows confirmations in seconds with minimal cost. Of the original supply of 100 billion XRP, Ripple Labs received 80 billion at the time of creation; the current circulating supply is around 57 billion, with the remainder being released periodically from escrow contracts. XRP was at the centre of one of the most closely watched legal cases in the sector: in December 2020, the US SEC sued Ripple Labs on the grounds that XRP was an unregistered security. The case concluded in August 2025 when both parties withdrew their appeals. The court established that XRP sales on public exchanges do not constitute a securities offering, although certain direct institutional sales were classified differently. Ripple paid a penalty of 50 million dollars.
For an asset with XRP's regulatory history, news carries particular weight. Court decisions, Ripple Labs moves, agreements with financial institutions, and shifts in regulatory positions across jurisdictions have historically shown the capacity to move the price quickly. News does not predict the market — but it is part of the environment. News hub →
XRP went through one of the most protracted regulatory processes in the crypto sector between 2020 and 2025. The outcome set a precedent on how digital assets are classified in secondary markets under US law. That context is part of its history, alongside its technology, its supply and its price trajectory.
